Author Debra Frasier featured speaker
Minnesota author and illustrator Debra Frasier delivers the keynote address at the fourth annual Writing Central: A Day for Literacy at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University, Friday, Nov. 12, at the Gorecki Dining and Conference Center.
The conference is open to anyone interested in writing and illustrating children's literature. It aims to bring together authors, educators and everyday writers to explore and share insights on the importance of writing.
Fraser will speak on "The Picture Book: Tiny Seed to Finished Book" at 9 a.m. at Room 204. She will take you through the process of assembling a picture book, from the beginning idea through writing/editing, illustrating and final production. Her visual presentation will help teachers understand the structure of a picture book, as well as aid their own efforts in creating a picture book.
Frasier is the author or illustrator of several books, including A Birthday Cake is No Ordinary Cake; A Fabulous Fair Alphabet; The Animal That Drank Up Sound; The Incredible Water Show; In The Space of the Sky; Miss Alaineus, A Vocabulary Disaster; On the Day You Were Born; Out of the Ocean; and We Got Here Together. She will sign copies of her books following the conclusion of the conference at 2 p.m.
In addition to her keynote address, Frasier will speak at breakout sessions at 10:10 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. Jill Dubbeldee Kuhn, a local children's book illustrator, will present a breakout session on drawing techniques at 11:10 a.m. A third breakout session is at 1:10 p.m., and includes a presentation with local poet Larry Schug.
Other breakout sessions will be offered by members of the CSB and SJU education department, including assistant professor Karen Bengtson, assistant professor Michael Borka and assistant professor Rachel Malchow-Lloyd.
The conference's registration fee is $65, and includes all conference materials, lunch and morning and afternoon snacks.
