The Kimball Cubs traveled to Holdingford to take on a very big and physical Husker team Friday, Oct. 1. Both teams started the game by moving the ball well. The Cubs were unable to cash in on their drives, while the Huskers made the young Cubs pay for the mistakes they made. The game was 7Ð0 with about 5:35 left in the first half. The Cubs moved down to the Huskers 14 and had a "first and 10." Then the Cubs shot themselves in the foot many times. Three penalties moved the ball back to the Huskers 43 and the Cubs couldn't cash in. The Huskers moved the ball down the field and scored to make the score 14-0 with 1:21 left in the half. The Cubs threw an interception on the following play to give the Huskers the ball around the Cubs 36 yard line. The Huskers threw up a jump ball to their 6'5" wide receiver, who was double-covered. The ball was tipped and the receiver was knocked down to the ground. The ball landed on the receivers belly while he lay on the ground three yards away. Next play, the huskers scored again to go into halftime up 20-0. The Cubs fought hard the whole second half but just couldn't get anything to go their way this night.
Junior running back Danny Lochen led the team in rushing with 100 yards on 16 carriers. Junior quarterback Aaron Laabs played well in his return at the position. He made many good throws that just were out of reach. The defense was led by Jordan Joseph who had 12 tackles; Junior defensive end Jesse Hedlund had eight tackles, a fumble recovery, and a blocked kick for the night. Senior punt and kick returner Ty Filzen led the special teams in the return game. The team has done very well in the return game this year.
The Cubs are home Friday, Oct. 8, against the number one team in the state in 2A in the EV-W Eagles. This is also the "Hall of Fame" induction night. The football team would like to congratulate the Class of 2010 Hall of Fame. Hope to see you support the football team and the inductees on this very special night in Kimball.
