Last Fall the Meeker County Senior 4-H Hippology team took first place out of 20 teams competing at the State 4-H Horse Show in St. Paul, and as a result went on to represent the Minnesota 4-H Horse Program at the Western National Roundup in January. The contest, held in Denver, Colo., was a four-phase event that included a written exam and slides, a stations phase, four team problems, and judging of four live classes of horses and riders. The team took fourth place out of 11 teams overall in the competition. They also took second place in the written exam phase, eighth place in stations, and eighth in the judging portion. Team members included Emma Skaggs of Litchfield, Kaitlyn Frenchick of Paynesville, Melanie Soderlund of Dassel, and Madeline VanderMey of Paynesville. The team completed the two days of contests and also attended the Denver Stock Show. Skaggs led the team with 530 points and placed fifth overall as an individual. Emma took first in the written exam and 9th in the stations portion. Soderlund followed with 516 points, Frenchick with 471 points, and VanderMey with 460 points. Participating in knowledge-based horse competition requires a great deal of dedication and commitment. The girls have been competing in these 4-H events for the past six years. In addition, they all successfully compete in various breed and open horse shows throughout the year with their own horses.
