Schiefelbein wrestles at State Tournament

Luke Schiefelbein competed in the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament this past week at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Luke a junior competed in the 171-pound weight class. He earned the honor of wrestling in the tournament by placing second in the Section 5A tournament. In the first round of action Luke's first opponent, Travis Rutt from Jackson County Central, was a returning state champion and is currently rated first in the state again this year (he also holds the state record for most career wins by any individual). Even though Luke came up on the short end of the scoreboard he was still not eliminated for the competition as Rutt won his next match keeping Luke alive in the tournament. Rutt went on to win the championship for the second year. Luke's next match was against Ben McPhail from Pine Island. As the match started out Luke jumped out to a quick two point lead and carried that lead into the second period. After a back and forth second period Luke went into the third period behind by two. With forty-five seconds left in the match Luke was down by one point and needed a takedown to gain the lead back; however McPhail scored the takedown to clinch the win by a score of 8-5 and eliminated Luke from the competition. McPhail went on to place fifth in the tournament. That loss concluded Luke's very successful season giving him a record of 29-7. Frank Schiefelbein IV, coach
