Alphonse Asfeld of rural Watkins died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at the Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. He was 90. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Ostmark Lutheran Church in rural Watkins with Pastor Melinda Melhus officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, and one hour prior to the services at the church Friday. Interment will be in the Ostmark Lutheran Cemetery. Alphonse Nicholas Asfeld was born Sept. 13, 1917, in Forest Prairie Township in Meeker County to George and Mary (Theis) Asfeld. He grew up and attended school in rural Watkins. He worked with his father and brothers on the form before moving to Mandan, No. Dak, and working for a dairy for a short time. He moved back to Minnesota and was united in Marriage to Mary Kay Kramp Dec. 31, 1940. He was drafted into the military in February 1942 and served in the 72nd Military Police Corp. in the European theater. In October 1945 he returned to Minnesota. Alphonse and Mary Kay lived with his parents for a short time before buying a farm in March 1946. Alphonse lived there the rest of his life farming and raising livestock. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, music and dancing. He also enjoyed watching baseball, feeding and watching birds. He was a true farmer with a green thumb who also enjoyed the animals on his farm. Alphonse was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Kay, and siblings Frank, Mary, Pete, Mike, Regina, John, Alvina and Fred. He is survived by his children Nina (and Craig) Leiser of Stillwater, John (and Sue) Asfeld of rural Watkins; grandchildren Becky (and Steve) Capezza, Michelle (and Nick) Guida, Melissa (and Andy) Lewis, Jennifer (and Steve)
Kinzer, Jill (and Mike) Smith, Jay Asfeld; great-grandchildren Macie, Joseph, Grady, Brylie, Alec,
Marissa, Bethany, Emma and Nicholas; sister Theresa Arbogast of Champlin; and sister-in-law
Lucille Asfeld of Watkins, in addition to other relatives and friends.
