Tournament at Hutchinson

Kimball 12U fastpitch competed in the Hutchinson Tournament in the non-stealing division. There were 12 teams in this bracket.

Kimball's first opponent was Brownton. Kimball just played them in league and lost by one run. Looking to avenge that loss, Kimball came out with a strong pitching performance by Denzel Atherton and Lauren Libbesmeier. These two girls and Kimball's defense held Brownton to two runs through seven innings. The offense took advantage of walks and some timely hits and won the game 12-2. Kimball advanced to the semi-finals vs. Hutch Hurricanes. This again is another team that we played in league and had lost by two runs. Kimball started off early hitting the ball putting three runs across the plate and continued this trend scoring five runs in the third inning and the fourth inning. The girls threatened to score every inning of this game showing some nice hitting off a left handed pitcher. With Kimball winning 13-7 in the top of the seventh inning, the Hurricanes put together two runs and threatening to score more, until Kimball's outfielders put together two great heads up plays. With a runner on first base, and a Hurricane hit to right center, outfielder Denzel Atherton threw the ball to second base person Emily Utecht to force the lead runner out. Now with two outs and a runner on first base, the Hurricane batter hits a base hit to left fielder Bailey Berscheid and she fires it to Utecht covering second base to force the runner out for the last out of the game. Kimball again showed a fine pitching performance by Denzel Atherton and Lauren Libbesmeier. Kimball wins the game by a score of 13-9 and advances to the championship!

Kimball's task to win the championship is to beat the Hutch Lightening. Kimball came out strong scoring 4 runs in the first inning. This was continued by Kimball scoring in every inning but one with some solid hits and running every ball out that was put in play. At the end of five innings, the score was 12-2 and the game ended due to the run rule. Kimball's hitting performance gave them the edge in this game. Madison Libbesmeier pitched all five innings of this game and struck out seven Lightening batters. This game proved to be a total team effort where the defense and offense each did their part. The players on this team were: Denzel Atherton, Bailey Berscheid, Becky Holtz, Tashi Kunkel, Ariel Laabs, Lauren Libbesmeier, Madison Libbesmeier, Hedy Robben, Taylor Schriener, Montana Tschida, and Emily Utecht. Congratulations to these girls on the first-place finish!

Ramsey Dirt Devil Classic

On June 5th and 6th, Kimball 12U participated in the Ramsey Dirt Devil Classic, who played host to 12 teams. The tournament was aligned that the girls first played three games in pool play on Saturday to seed them for the double elimination tournament on Sunday. On a rainy Saturday, the girls went 2-1 in pool play. We beat Anoka Ramsey 11-6, lost to Monticello 7-10, and came out strong against a tough Soderville team winning with a score of 12-3. Our performance on Saturday seeded us #three out of four in the upper bracket for championship Sunday. Prior Lake received the top seed, Soderville received the second seed, Kimball was the third seed, and Becker got the 4th seed. This set us up to see Soderville in the opening game on Sunday.

Starting out on Sunday, Kimball again came out strong scoring a run in the top of the first inning and followed this trend throughout the game, scoring at least once every inning against Soderville. Defense and pitching proved successful in making several great plays and pitcher Lauren Libbesmeier not allowing a walk in the game. Kimball's hitting and plate discipline came through in putting the ball in play and earning several base hits against a fast Soderville pitcher. Kimball won the game 8-3 to advance to the Championship round against Prior Lake. Kimball started out strong again, scoring runs in the top of the first inning and continued throughout the game this way. Pitching and defense did their job in holding some good hitters to single base hits or making the play and getting them out. Going into the last inning Kimball was leadingby a score of 6-5. Prior Lake came out with there bats and quickly scored one run to tie the game. With Kimball winning the toss for home team, they came up to bat in the bottom of the inning to score the game winning run. Hedy Robben led off the inning by earning a walk. She then stole second base. With no outs, Emily Utecht came up to bat and hit a line shot up the middle for a double which scored Hedy from second base giving Kimball the win 7-6!

Kimball completed the tournament going 4-1 and played in a variety of weather conditions. This is the second year in row Kimball has taken first place in the top bracket of the Ramsey Tournament. We seen many different types of pitching and the girls made the proper adjustments to be successful in these situations. Kimball's defense and pitching came through while playing in a tournament where the dropped third strike rule was in effect, stealing bases, and advancing on passed ball/wild pitches were allowed. There was a lot of learning that took place, while also experiencing success doing it. Players on this team were: Denzel Atherton, Bailey Berscheid, Becky Holtz, Shay Krippner, Tashi Kunkel, Ariel Laabs, Lauren Libbesmeier, Madison Libbesmeier, Hedy Robben, Amanda Roerick, Kaitlen Truenow, and Emily Utecht.
