Freedom, but not independence

At this time of year, we Americans celebrate our freedom and independence. In every season, Christians rejoice in our freedom in Christ Ð but not our independence. We do have incredible freedom in Him: freedom from sin, death, and hell. He broke their fierce grip on the cross, once and for all. "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." Yes, we are free, and there is no greater freedom to be found on earth. If death can't harm you, you are truly free.

But we are not independent. The spirit of independence was born in the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve decided to go it alone. They chose independence rather than dependence on their loving Creator, and their choice led to death. We were created to be totally dependent on our God. His Word alone gives us life. His Gospel Ð the promise of forgiveness and life through faith in Jesus Ð alone gives us faith and keeps that faith alive and growing. His Word alone guides us through life, showing us the way we should live. Apart from Him, our sinful nature will always lead us astray. We will follow our own screwed-up conscience or live the way our world lives. And independence still will lead us only to death.

God urges all people to "choose life." His voice, His words alone can lead us to life Ð life that lasts forever. As we celebrate the freedom and independence we enjoy as Americans, let us also resolve to shake off sinful independence and live in perfect dependence on our God through His Word, ever celebrating our eternal freedom in Christ.
