The Kimball softball team won its' quarterfinal playoff game Friday, May 21, and now moves into the Subsection 5A West semifinals for the first time since 2003. The Cubs prevailed in an intense contest against Swanville by a 5-2 score. Swanville jumped out to a 2-0 lead Êwith single runs in the first and third innings. The Cubs stranded two baserunners in each of the first two innings, but couldn't score. The third inning started with Tiffany Berscheid singling. Tesslynn Callander walked, and then Megan Garding doubled to left scoring Berscheid. Callander scored on a passed ball to tie the game. The Cubs took a 3-2 lead when Garding scored on the back end of a double steal, when Megan Libbesmeier stole second.
In the fourth inning, Erin Gilpatrick and Shantel Tschida walked. Callander singled in Gilpatrick, and then Tschida scored on a passed ball to make the score 5-2. Kimball pitcher Megan Libbesmeier and the Cubs defense then took over, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the rest of the game. Swanville was stymied by good pitching, as Megan Libbesmier pitched a 6-hitter, with eight strikeouts and two walks. Big defensive plays were turned in by Megan Garding who started an inning-ending double play, and Tesslynn Callander, with an assist from Natalie Stein, picked a runner off third in the sixth, to end a Swanville threat.
In the game, Tiffany Berscheid was 2-4 with a run scored, Tesslynn Callander was 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI, and Megan Garding was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Megan Libbesmeier was the wininng pitcher for the Cubs. The Kimball team now moves into the semifinals, which will be played Tuesday, May 25, at Minnewaska High School. The Cubs semifinal opponent will be EV-W, who defeated Browerville in their quarterfinal game. The other semifinal will pit B-B-E versus top-seeded Osakis also at Minnewaska. Both games start at 5 p.m. in Glenwood. The Section 5A west championship game will be Thursday, May 27, at the same location.
UPDATE: The Cubs indeed won their game Tuesday against EV-W with a score of 3-2. They will play Osakis at Minnewaska 3 p.m. Thursday for the title of Section 5A West champions.
