Francis "Fritz" Ertl of Waite Park, formerly of Watkins, died Friday, June 27, 2008, at the Sterling Park Health Care Center in Waite Park. He was 86. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 30, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins with Fr. John Brunner officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Francis "Fritz" Ertl was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Watkins to Joseph and Mary (Huberty) Ertl. He grew up and received his education in the Watkins area, and graduated from Dunwoody Institute as a Master Electrician. During World War II, Fritz moved to San Francisco where he wired and tested military ships being built for the war. Fritz married Rita Sturm Aug. 12, 1947, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. They resided in Watkins where Fritz and his brother Greg operated an electrical and appliance store prior to joining his father as an electrician with J.M. Ertl & Sons, Inc. He retired in 1995. About 10 years ago, Fritz and Rita moved to Waite Park where they resided until the present time.
Fritz enjoyed family gatherings and spending time at the cabin on Pearl Lake. He was an avid Twins fan, and his hobbies included fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing, and playing cards. He helped with the organization of the Kimball Golf Club and served as a board member. Fritz was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Andrew, Wilfred "Ole", Gregory and Alphonse Ertl.
Fritz is survived by Rita Ertl, his wife of 61 years, of Waite Park; children Dave (and Ninfa) Ertl of St. Joseph, Kathy (and Mark) Bjorke of Waite Park, Mike (and Melissa) Ertl of St. Joseph, Mark (and Martha) Ertl of Minneapolis; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and brother Norbert "Nups" Ertl of Watkins. Casketbearers were Doug Ertl, Jerry Ramirez, Tom Sturm, Jack Sturm, Jerrell "Stan" Stanley, and Gene "Twinks" Plumski. Music was provided by Mary Streit and the church choir. Arrangements were by Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins.
