Accident cuts power Richard Kiley, 62 of Rice, was operating an "ultralite" (similiar to a hang glider) Saturday, June 21, when he collided with power lines about 9:45 p.m. in the
area of County Road 3/County Road 4 in St. Wendel Township. The collision caused the power to go out in much of northeastern Stearns County, reports the Stearns County Sheriff's Office. Kiley received minor injuries and was taken to St. Cloud Hospital by family members. Crews worked the weekend to restore power. ********** Chain-reaction accident Lonny Johnson, 47 of Balaton, was airlifted to the St. Cloud Hospital with facial injuries Thursday, June 19, following a chain-reaction accident about noon on U.S. Highway 12. Johnson was driving a 2000 International semi-trailer when he rear-ended a stopped 1998 International semi-trailer being driven by William Ruhland, 49 of Eden Valley, states the report from the Minnesota State Patrol. The accident, which caused Ruhland's trailer to disconnect, caused a chain-reaction with a 1995 Ford Windstar and 2005 Mazda stationwagon and closed the highway for a few hours. Ruhland received
minor cuts and bruises. Driver of the 2005 Mazda - Adam Dennis, 28 of Emeryville, Calif. - was transported to Rice Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. Mohamed Esse, 31 of Minneapolis, was driving the Windstar and was not injured. The Kandiyohi Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene. ********** Motorcycle-deer fatal Twenty-one year-old Mitchell Tokach of Paynesville was killed in a motorcycle-deer accident Friday, June 20, on County Road 123 in Eden Lake Township, 2.5 miles southeast of Roscoe. Stearns County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 911 call at 11:45 p.m. Tokach had been driving his 2007 Kawasaki ZX 600 eastbound on County Road 123 when he struck a deer. Tokach lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown off. Emergency medical procedures were unsuccessful and Tokach was pronounced dead at the scene. Also dispatched to the scene were the Paynesville Fire and Rescue Squad, Paynesville Ambulance and Life Link Air Ambulance. The accident remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office. ********** Vehicle-tractor collision Stearns County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a car fire at 10:45 p.m. Friday, June 20, in St. Wendell Township, and upon arrival discovered the car fire was the result of a collision between a motor vehicle and a farm tractor towing farm equipment. Elvin Sowada, 40 of Avon, was operating a John Deere tractor northbound on 130th Ave. (1 mile south of County Road 4) pulling farm equipment, when a southbound vehicle, driven by Wade Barrett, 31 of Sauk Rapids, struck the tractor and equipment. A passenger in the Barret vehicle,
Samantha Fussy, 24 of Sauk Rapids, was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of injuries. Neither Sowada or Barrett were injured in the crash. Also dispatched to the scene was St. Stephen Fire and Rescue, along with Gold Cross Ambulance. The accident remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.
