Four west-central Minnesota residents face fines, loss of hunting privileges

Three adults and a juvenile from the town of Beardsley, in Traverse County in west-central Minnesota, face fines and restitution totaling nearly $13,000 for a variety of charges from a November deer poaching case, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Jason James Murphy, 22, is charged with gross misdemeanor shining, transporting a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, discharge of a firearm at a deer from the road right of way, and open bottle of alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

Tanner Aric Zych, 20, is charged with gross misdemeanor shining, transporting a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, open bottle of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, and under age 21 possession and consumption of an alcoholic beverage.

Ryan Jay Murphy, 18, is charged with gross misdemeanor shining, shooting at deer from the road right of way, untagged big game, and failure to validate a site tag.

A 16-year-old juvenile is charged with gross misdemeanor shining, gross misdemeanor transport of an illegally taken deer, shooting a deer from the road right of way, and taking deer without a firearms deer license.

DNR Conservation Officer Daniel Baumbarger of Wheaton said if the four are convicted, each faces a maximum penalty of $2,000 for gross misdemeanor shining, as well as a total of $2,700 in fines on a variety of other charges. Restitution is $500 for each deer. Their hunting privileges could also be revoked for three years.

Investigators seized two deer, a 2009 and 2004 pickup truck, four shotguns, and two spotlights, which are now property of the state of Minnesota.

A trial date in Traverse County District Court has not been set.

Monday Dec. 20

3:32 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins ambulance for a medical at an address on Shire Road North, Watkins. The individual was treated at the scene.

Sunday Dec. 19

1:23 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of criminal damage to property at the intersection of Central Avenue and 2nd Street, Watkins.

4:39 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance for an injury at Powder Ridge Ski Hill, Watkins. One person was transported to St. Cloud Hospital.

11:08 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of a noise complaint from an address on Cedar Avenue South, Watkins. A deputy arrived in the area and found all was quiet.

Saturday Dec. 18

9:36 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Watkins Ambulance to a medical on County State Aid Highway 36, Eden Valley. One individual was transported to St. Cloud Hospital.

1:15 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Watkins Ambulance per Stearns County Sheriff's Office to a medical on Hyneman Avenue, Eden Valley. One individual was transported to Paynesville Hospital.

4:36 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of illegal dumping on 735th Avenue, South Haven.

6:55 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a cellular 9-1-1 hang up call from a location near 330th Street and 645th Avenue, Watkins. A deputy located the caller and found everything to be okay.

11:17 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of a driving complaint on MN Highway 15, Kimball. A deputy located the vehicle and warned the driver of the complaint.

Friday, Dec. 17

8:22 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to and dispatched Gold Cross Ambulance and Dassel Rescue for a medical at a residence on County State Aid Highway 19, Kingston. One individual was transported to St Cloud Hospital.

Thursday, Dec. 16

4:45 a.m. the Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 cellular call reporting a property damage accident in the area of Meeker Stearns Street and 632nd Avenue, Watkins. There were no injuries reported. It was determined that the accident was in Stearns County. Stearns County was notified and will be handling the call.

10:36 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance to a medical at a business on 4th Street North, Watkins. One individual was transported to the Paynesville Hospital.

12:37 p.m. the Sheriff's Office assisted Canadian Pacific Railway Police in attempting to locate two hunters near the crossing on 667th Avenue, Watkins. A deputy searched the area and found the parties to be gone on arrival.

7:08 p.m. the Sheriff's Office located some lost property in the area of Central Avenue North, Watkins. The deputy located the owner and returned the property.

Wednesday, Dec. 15

10:59 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to and dispatched Watkins Ambulance to a medical at a residence on Luella Street, Watkins. One individual was transported to the Paynesville Hospital.

11:02 a.m. the Sheriff's Office assisted the Wright County Sheriff's Office in locating a vehicle traveling towards County State Aid Highway 27, Kimball. The deputy was canceled a short time later as Wright County Deputies had located the vehicle in their county.

6:30 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 cellular hang up call. Upon callback, the individual stated all was fine and that they had misdialed. The deputy responded, checking the residence on MN Highway 55, Watkins and found every to be ok at the residence and that it had been a misdial.

Tuesday, Dec. 14

8:56 a.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of an alarm at a residence on 743rd Avenue, South Haven. Before a deputy's arrival the alarm company called back and advised.

10:01 a.m. the Sheriff's Office received a complaint of a possible scam attempt at an address on County State Aid Highway 2, Watkins. A deputy spoke to the party and advised of their options.

2:13 p.m. a deputy reported an occupied stalled vehicle on MN Highway 55 West, Watkins. The deputy made contact with the driver who was ok and had stopped to make a phone call.

5:46 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to and dispatched Watkins Ambulance, Watkins Rescue and Watkins Fire for a two-vehicle accident on MN Highway 55, Watkins. All parties were checked out at the scene and no transport was needed.

7:14 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance to a medical at Powder Ridge Ski Hill, Kimball. One individual was transported to the Buffalo Hospital.
