Kimball girls enjoy win, suffer first loss

Monday, Dec. 6, the Kimball girls' basketbal team hosted the Paynesville Bulldogs in a non-conference matchup. Kimball jumped out to an early lead-off of a flurry of steals, as guards Natalie Stein, Rachel Arnold, and Brooke Merten set the tone in the front end of their full-court defense. A late run by Paynesville in the first halftime cut into the lead, with Kimball leading 36-29 at halftime. In the second half, the Cubs responded by regaining the momentum and extending their lead. The excellent post play of Megan Garding and Mandy Wittenberg helped balance the attack as Kimball would finish with a 68-44 victory. Stein would lead all scorers with 14 points and seven steals. Garding and Wittenberg each scored 12 points with Garding leading in rebounds with seven. Brooke Merten and Erin Dingmann each added eight points, Rachel Arnold finished with six points, Sam Stuve four, Liz Kastanek two points with four steals, and Shannon Donnay two points.
Thursday, Dec. 9, Kimball would travel to ACGC for their first road game of the year. This game would begin much the same as the Cubs full-court defense forced an early rally, jumping out to a 16-7 lead half way through the first half. But after this point the Cubs would face much adversity the rest of the game. Kimball would be plagued by foul trouble as ACGC crept back in the game to take a 21-20 lead at halftime. With a little frustration setting in Kimball's shooting also went cold in the second half, as ACGC's zone defense grew into a monster of its own. At the free-throw line, Kimball would make only one of four attempts in the contest while the Falcons shot 28 times, making 11. At the final buzzer, ACGC defended their home court by defeating Kimball 46-37. The Cubs were led offensively by Rachel Arnold's 12 points, four steals, and four rebounds. Mandy Wittenberg also finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Liz Kastanek finshed with six points and four steals, Erin Dingmann three points, Brooke Merten two points and five steals, and Natalie Stein two points. The Cubs record on the season now stands at 2-1, as next they host Holdinford Friday, Dec. 17, followed by Upsala at Kimball Monday Dec. 20.
