The Kimball Cubs hosted the Milaca Wolves in section 5AA basketball last Thursday night, Dec. 9.
Kimball started out slow, but gained momentum as the first half proceeded. The Cubs led by one at the break 21-20. In the first half, Kimball was five for 13 from the free-throw line and seven of 19 from the field.
Milaca started out hot in the second half and made seven of nine three-pointers. The Wolves were ahead by nine with about five and a half minutes to play. The Cubs made a run to cut into the lead, only to be answered by Milaca. With three minutes and 16 seconds remaining, Kimball was down by nine once again. The Cubs, however, just would not quit.
Inspired by their four seniors (Ty Filzen, Neil Helgeson, Brett Ostby, and Dillon Menson), the Cubs battled back and took a one-point lead with about 40 seconds to play. Milaca answered and retook the lead with
20 seconds remaining. With 6.6 seconds on the clock, Neil Helgeson was fouled and stepped to the line to shoot free-throws. Helgeson calmly sank both, and a Milaca three-point attempt fell short at the buzzer. The Cubs walked away with a dramatic 55-54 victory and their first 3-0 start since the 1999-2000 season.
Helgeson tossed in 21 points while Ostby and Menson chipped in with 15 and 11 respectively. Menson led the rebounding effort with 11 boards. Helgeson dished out five assists and Cameron Hunt added four. Neil Helgeson also contributed six steals. Two players who really stood out even though they did not put up big statistical games were Ty Filzen and Cameron Hunt. Filzen made two huge baskets late in the second half and simply would not allow his team to lose. Cameron Hunt, in his first varsity start, had no turnovers and did a great job handling the ball under pressure. He found open teammates and really played under control. Kimball has a record of three wins and no losses as they host Long Prairie/Grey Eagle Thursday, Dec. 16, in the first round of the Kimball Holiday Tournament.
