Kimball traveled to St. John's Prep on a snowy Friday evening (Dec. 3) to take on the Johnnies in the basketball opener for both teams. The Cubs started out slowly, struggling to shoot the ball to begin the game. In the first half the Cubs shot only 27 percent (9/33) from the field. Kimball found themselves down by six points early in the game, but played a good defense and rallied to go into the half behind by only twopoints (21-23).
The second half was a different story for the Cubs. Kimball moved the ball much better and had their inside game working with Dillon Menson netting a quick six points. Neil Helgeson scored from inside and out, putting in 20 second-half points. Ty Filzen did a great job of finding open teammates with four second-half assists. Guards Cameron Hunt and Brett Ostby contributed second-half baskets, helping to push the Kimball lead to 14 at one point. The Cubs closed out the game with a 61-49 victory over the Johnnies.
Helgeson led the team in scoring with 31 points. Dillon Menson, Brett Ostby, and Aaron Laabs chipped in with nine, seven and six points respectively. Ty Filzen finished with six assists and Neil Helgeson added three. In his first varsity action, Seke Snead led all rebounders with seven boards, Aaron Laabs contributed six. Cole Denn picked up three steals for the Cubs.
"It was a great team effort," stated Coach Klein. "We had nine players who all made a positive impact, one way or the other, in tonight's game."
