After two-plus weeks of practice, the Kimball girls' basketball team was anxious to take the court to tip-off the 2010-2011 season. The Cubs hosted Royalton and Kimball jumped out to an early lead over the Royals, behind the perimeter sharp shooting of juniors Erin Dingmann, Brooke Merten, and senior Natalie Stein. Kimball's interior post presence of senior Megan Garding and junior Mandy Wittenberg added to the Royals' frustrations, as Kimball mounted a 34-17 halftime lead. Kimball players took turns sharing in the success on opening night as the team's defense forced Royalton into 33 turnovers, while the unselfish offense had mutiple players contributing. The Cubs defended their home court well, allowing only 32 points to their opponent as they finished with a 50-32 victory. Kimball was led by Wittenberg's 13 points, followed by Merten, Stein, and Garding, all scoring eight points. Dingmann finished with six points, junior Liz Kastanek had four points, while seniors Klarissa Eisnebraun and Shannon Donnay, and Junior Sam Stuve were all one for two from the free throw line. Next up, the Cubs play two games on the road at ACGC Thursday, Dec. 9 and at EV-W Dec. 14.
