Horse Judging is a useful skill for many people, not just those in the horse industry. Horse Judging is an activity in which 4-H'ers learn and apply knowledge of the ideal features of a variety of horse breeds and a variety of riding styles. They evaluate each horse in relation to the ideal for the breed and in relation to the other horses in the class. In addition to simply placing the class, contestants also defend their placings or give oral reasons to an official in order to further prove their knowledge of the horses.

Through participating in 4-H Horse Judging, participants learn more about horses, to be confident about their decisions, to use logic when faced with a problem, to express and defend their ideas in a calm and poised manner, and to stand up and speak in front of strangers, in addition to countless other skills that will successfully guide any person through school and a career after that.
