The Kimball Cubs played host to the fifth-ranked Pierz Pioneers. It was a great night, Friday,
Sept. 17, to play football. The young Cubs came ready to fight hard this night. They held their own for three quarters, but Pierz's size and numbers wore the Cubs down as they pulled away for a 40 to 12 win. The Cubs defense for three quarters held the potent Pierz offense to 3.3 yards a carry. Coming into the game they were averaging almost nine yards a carry. The young Cubs made some mistakes that led to some easy scores for the Pioneers, but the Cubs only trailed 26 to 12 midway through the third quarter, thanks to the defense scoring two touchdowns.
Junior-cornerback Austin Ruehle had a game many only dream to have, as he returned a 35 yard interception into the first Cub score in the second quarter. Then in the third quarter, he returned a fumble back for a 94-yard touchdown. That score brought the score to 26 to 12 Pierz. They couldn't get any closer, as Pierz controlled the ball for most of the remaining time. The defense was led by Ruehle, junior-linebacker Travis Schiefelbein who led tacklers with 12, followed by junior-safety Danny lochen. The offense was led by Lochen as he led as rushers for the Cubs.
The Cubs host the Maple Lake Irish for homecoming this week. Hope to see you all there to support the volleyball and football teams. Good luck Cubs.
