Send in the Clowns - Municipal Band Concert

The St. Cloud Municipal Band's Annual Circus Concert is at

7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Barden Park in St. Cloud. It will be the 21st annual circus concert. The group has ended its Summer Concert Series with a circus theme since 1989.

Former Municipal Band Director (1985 Ð 1995), Bob Wig set up the first circus concert two decades ago. Wig says, "I thought it would be fun to establish an annual circus music night in St. Cloud," and he felt the last performance of the summer concert series was a perfect fit. Current director Adam Tervola Hultberg says the performance is challenging and a lot of fun for the band, "The concert is a great challenge as we only get one rehearsal before we have to perform, but it is one of our most popular performances of the year."

Joyce Van Heel and Marilyn Wig have been dressing up as clowns for years. Van Heel says they keep coming back as clowns to bring smiles to the crowd, "I love to dress up, make people laugh, and act silly. I found a Miss Piggy costume at a garage sale for $2.50, and have come as her ever since." Van Heel has sewn more than 20 clown costumes over the years, and recruits friends, family, and anyone else who wants to clown around to help perform. There have been as many as 28 clowns at the circus concert, and there are always lots of helium balloons and crepe paper streamers as well.

Tervola Hultberg says it is a great tradition which will go on for years, "It is a great atmosphere for a concert with the clowns, the balloons, and being in Barden Park. It is a great event for kids and the whole family. We hit the 20th anniversary last year and plan to reach our 50th anniversary and beyond." Bob Wig still selects most of the music for the concert by utilizing the St. Cloud Municipal Band's music and the Brass Band lending library.

The St. Cloud Municipal Band is a fellowship of musicians sharing a tradition of performing great music. The Municipal Band is a non-profit organization.
