The Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MMTA) sponsored its annual preliminary contest in sites across the state in January. The Central District's competition took place at the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Jan. 23, with the participation of 350 pianists representing 54 teachers. Hannah Zipoy, a freshman at Kimball Area High School, is a winner in the Intermediate A category, one of the eight age divisions in which piano students compete. The categories range from the Pre-Primary division (6 years and younger) through Senior B (19-20). Each student performs a memorized piece from a list prepared by a committee of MMTA teachers.
Hannah will go on to compete in the State Contest Finals this coming weekend at Ferguson Hall, University of Minnesota campus. Pianists with the highest grades in the Contest Finals are selected for ensemble performance in the State Honors Concert at Northrup Auditorium, U of M. The concert has grown into a gala event involving 700 young performers playing on 20 grand pianos in ensemble groups.
Hannah, you're wished the best in the State Finals.
