Freshman Marcus Hamer(103) placed fourth in the state tournament last weekend. Marcus is the youngest Cub to place at the state tournament. Marcus started out the tournament pinning the fifth-ranked Trevor Stilke from Frazee in 1:46. In the quarter finals, Marcus lost a very close match 2-3 in the closing seconds to Gus McCarthy from Border-West, who is ranked eighth in state and finished the tournament in second place. Marcus came back in the wrestle backs beating Andrew Dayland from St. Charles 11-5, Evan Knudson from Yellow Medicine East 4-2 and Zach Kuhns from Maple River 10-3. This set Marcus up in the third-place match against Kurt Timmons from Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg who is ranked sixth in the state. Marcus battled very hard and has the scars to prove it, but lost the battle 4-8. Marcus wrestled above his state ranking of seventh in the state to bring home a fourth-place finish.
Tanner Mills(112) started off the tournament with a first-round win over Brad Meyer from Pierz winning 5-2. In the quarter finals, Tanner faced Zach Keller from Medford, ranked second in state, and eventually finished third in the tournament. Tanner lost a close match by a decision 1-3. In the wrestle backs, Tanner lost 2-8 to Mitch Steffens from Wadena Deer Creek ranked ninth in state.
Some of the Kimball fans did some research and looked back at past tournaments and could not find a seventh-grader who qualified for the state tournament heavier than 125 pounds. Kimball's seventh-grader Jordan Joseph made his first state tournament appearance this year at 135 pounds. In the first round, Jordan lost 2-13 to Clint Poster from Pierz, ranked second in state and finished third in the tournament. Jordan was able to get a wrestle back match, but it did not get any easier as he lost a tough battle with Ethan Hildebrandt from St. James ranked fourth in the state by a decision 2-3. Hildebrandt finished the tournament placing fifth.
Caramon Hansen (140) started off his first state tournament appearance with a dominating win 15-7 over Max Aho from United North Central. In the quarter-finals, Caramon lost an exciting match going back and forth the whole time 11-13 to Skyler Quamme from Kenyon-Wanamingo who upset the second-ranked kid in the first round and finished the tournament placing sixth. Caramon then had to wrestle the second-ranked Sam Derynk from Minneota, losing this battle 3-11. Derynck eventually finished the tournament in fifth place.
Making his second state tournament appearance was Sophomore Travis Schiefelbein(152). In the first round, Travis faced the number one ranked kid in state and the eventual State Champ Ryan Thompson from Benson, Travis lost the match 7-20. In the wrestle backs, Travis lost a hard-fought match 3-7 to Sam Lindgren from LeSueur-Henderson.
All of the Cubs wrestled very hard in the tournament and gained some great experience for next year, as we return all of our qualifiers. This year was filled with some great accomplishments as we set a new single-season wins record as a team, we sent a seventh-grader to state at 135 pounds, Tyler Kuechle won his 100th match in the Individual Section Tournament, and the Cubs sent five guys to the state tournament, and made the final four for the first time since the 2003 season. We are returning all but one senior for next year. Justin Huhn joined wrestling his senior year to help us out in a big way, filling our 119 spot weighing in at 112 all year long. Justin was out-weighed in every match he wrestled, but his strength and willingness to learn was enough to earn him 10 wins on Varsity.
Here is how the Varsity Cubs finished this year:
