It seems hard to believe that we are into March already. Another school year is flying by and soon we will be talking about graduation and summer. I want to take a few minutes and update you on some recent actions of the board.
We recently put together a committee to review the fund-raising and field-trip policies of the district. We have heard from many people in the community about these issues over the last few years and wanted to review the policies to see that we were meeting the needs of the students and being sensitive to the economic conditions of the community. We received many e-mails and phone calls, so realize that these are important issues. After much discussion and reflection, we have made the decision to reduce both fund raising and field trips. Each grade or activity will be limited to one sales type of fund raiser per year. Service learning and sponsored meals as fund raisers will be continued. We believe these are great activities for the students and provide a service to the community. We are also limiting each grade to one out-of-district field trip per year. These are the guidelines, but we will continue to review unique opportunities for the students and address them as they arise.
We are beginning a new program where several times during the year we will have a meeting about a focused topic in the district. The goal is to provide an opportunity for the community, school board, teachers and staff to get together to hear a short presentation and then have a discussion about the topic. We hope to bring a greater understanding of what happens in the school and how that impacts the students and the community.
The first meeting will be at 6 p.m. next Monday, March 1. We will be meeting in the board room at the district office. The topic will be Post Secondary Options and Academic Standards. Some of the items that will be included in the discussion will be:
What is PSEO
