Programming at Kimball Public Library

Great River Regional Library is providing the following programs at its Kimball branch.

Meet the Author Jess Lourey - Feb. 27

Jess Lourey, author of the Murder By Month series, will give a presentation at the Kimball Public Library from 10 - 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. A reviewer described Lourey as "the literary love child of Agatha Christie and Garrison Keillor." Her series began with "May Day" and the most recent is "September Fair," set at the Minnesota State Fair. She is based in Minnesota, and will talk about writing and publishing a novel.

Cartoon Art Workshop - March 1

The Kimball Public Library is offering a Cartoon Art Workshop for ages 12-18 from 3:15 - 5:45 p.m. Monday, March 1. Sign up for this workshop to learn what it takes to be an illustrator and author of your own book. The workshop will include character and story outline development, comic drawing techniques and layout options. It will also include some comic book history and discussion of noted artists. Students are asked to bring a short story to work with and/or existing artwork they may want to use. Basic materials will be provided. The workshop will be presented by Shayann Hoffer, an award-winning freelance artist and educator who works with youth in the areas of drawing, painting, cartooning and still-clip animation. She has a BFA in painting and did post graduate art study at the University of Oregon. Attendance is limited to 20 and preregistration is required. The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir - March 4

Kao Kalia Yang, author of "The Latehomecomer: A Hmong family memoir," will give a presentation at the Kimball Public Library from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4. Yang immigrated to St. Paul, Minn., when she was six years old. Since then, she has earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative nonfiction writing from Columbia University in New York. She will talk about her family's harrowing escape from Laos, their life in refugee camps, and the hardships and joys that came with carving out a life in Minnesota.

These presentations were funded with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2008, which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota's arts and cultural heritage.
