After starting the 2009-2010 season with a 6-1 record in November and December, the month of January proved to provide continued success. The Cubs won nine more games against two losses through Feb. 4, to push their record to 15-3.
In the post-holiday portion, the schedule began at Milaca with a 42-20 win. The Cubs held Milaca to 3 points in the second half, while getting scores from nine Kimball players. Good defensive pressure and opportunistic offense continued to be the hallmark of this group, and wins over Swanville (52-27), HL-W-W (35-25) and Rockford (38-31) proved this. St. John's Prep was the next opponent and a highlight of the 47-20 win was German exchange student Larissa Anthofer's 6 points scored. Next up was Pierz and the Cubs were given a lesson in aggression, as the Pioneers dominated the boards and gave the Cubs their second loss of the season.
The Cubs rebounded the next week with a victory over B-B-E, and then traveled to EV-W in a rematch with the team that had beaten the Cubs the first time. The game was much more competitive this time, as both teams struggled against intense defensive pressure to put points on the board. The halftime score was 12-11, but the Eagles prevailed in the end, partially because of the Cubs' poor 3 for 11 free-throw shooting to get the win.
The Cubs bounced back from that loss to win their next three games, against NYA, Upsala, and a repeat win over Holdingford, again with good defense, and just enough offense to get by. The Cubs' record as of Feb. 4, stands at 15-3. The team is averaging 38 points per game, while allowing only 29 per game. The Cubs are hitting 33 percent of their field goal attempts, compared to 28 percent for our opponents. An area of concern, as it has been all season, is a poor 42 percent free-throw average, which has kept some games closer than needed. Our top point scorer has been Emily Donnay with 90 points, but nine other players have scored 25 to 87 points to spread the scoring around. Emily Donnay, Brooke Merten, Kayla Myers, Erin Dingmann, Liz Kastanek, Rachel Arnold, Shannon Donnay, Sam Stuve, and Amanda Wittenberg have all taken turns leading the scoring for games. Amanda moved up exclusively to the varsity after Jan. 8. Rachel, Brooke, and Shannon play one half of JV games, and are then available for both halves of varsity games. Liz, Erin, Kayla, and Klarissa Eisenbraun are varsity reserves. Samantha Stuve, Sammi Wright, Kayla Overland, Emily Donnay, Larissa Anthofer and Lara Weber are full-time JV players.
The season is winding down with six games remaining. At ACGC, home versus HL-W-W, at Rockford, home against Pierz, and the season finale at B-B-E Feb. 26.
