Marvin Ashwill of rural Dassel, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, in Quartszite, Ariz. surrounded by his family. He was 92.
Marvin L. Ashwill was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Sanborn, Iowa, to Don Eli and Aina (Byttynen) Ashwill. When he was an infant, his family moved to the Kingston area where he was baptized and later confirmed in the Old Apostolic Lutheran faith. June 18, 1939, Marvin was united in marriage to Doris Olson of South Haven. They lived and farmed in the Lake Sylvia area, Annandale, and Kimball. They moved in 1956 to their current farm in the Collinwood Township, Dassel. In addition to farming, Marvin developed real estate at Melody Lane on Lake Francis and at Ashwill Shores on Collinwood Lake. He enjoyed spending time with his family, attending fairs, steam and tractor shows, collecting antiques, traveling, sharing stories, and visiting with friends over coffee. He will be remembered for his quiet sense of humor and kind heart.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters Bernice Smith, Clarence Ashwill, Harriet Smith, Leonard Ashwill, and Richard Ashwill; half-brother Orville Lenox; daughters-in-law Jean Ashwill and Susan Ashwill.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Doris I. Ashwill; sons Darrell Ashwill of Dassel, and Dennis (and Rosa) Ashwill of Plankinton, S.D.; half-sister Pearl Zopfi of Blaine, grandchildren Jason (and Christine) Ashwill of St. Cloud, and Meredith (and Tom) Lyon of St. Joseph; great-grandchildren Michael Ashwill, Danielle Lyon, and Chase Lyon; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service planned for Marvin at a later date.
