Cubs win over Falcons
The Cubs traveled to Grove City last Tuesday, Jan. 26, to take on the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Falcons. Kimball started out hot from the field and jumped to an early lead. The Falcons changed their defense and narrowed the gap, trailing by 4 at halftime (27-23).
In the second half, ACGC tied the score in the first couple minutes of action. The Cubs, however, responded, and built the lead to as many as 16. The Falcons made a late rally to cut the lead to 6, but Kimball answered and won by a final margin of 10 points (67-57).
Kimball shot the ball extremely well from the free-throw line, going 17-18 (94 percent) and from the field (25 of 52, 48 percent). The Cubs out-rebounded the Falcons by a margin of 31 to 28. Neil Helgeson led the scoring attack with 30 points. Alex Fischer tossed in 12. Pat Libbesmeier and Alex Fischer led the Cubs on the boards with 7 each. Helgeson dished out six assists and added three steals. The win evened the Cubs overall record at six wins and six losses.
Kimball drops conference game to Lakers
Kimball traveled to Howard Lake to take on the HL-W-W Lakers last Thursday, Jan. 28. The Cubs jumped out to an early lead, playing solid defense against the Lakers. Kimball took a 2-point lead into the half (29-27).
In the second frame, the Cubs built the lead to 5 at 36-31, with 11 minutes remaining. The Lakers responded with an 8-point run to recapture the lead at 39-36. The momentum shift proved to be too much for the Cubs to overcome, as they lost by a score of 57-50.
Pat Libbesmeier and Dillon Menson paced the Kimball scorers with 11 points apiece. Neil Helgeson handed out five assists. Libbesmeier, Helgeson, and Alex Fischer each totaled seven rebounds for the Cubs. The loss drops the Cubs to 2-4 in conference play and a 6-7 record overall.
