Year 2009 in Review - August

Son of a Butcher Bar in Kimball expanded into the adjoining space formerly occupied by Bella's Coffee Shop. The coffee shop had been closed for some months. It took a day or two, but a doorway was cut through the adjoining walls of the two brick buildings. The extra space provides additional dining space.

Kimball held its "National Night Out" on Aug. 4 with family events for all ages.

Gracie Fox was crowned Little Miss Kimball Aug. 7. Other candidates were Kaitlyn Decknatel, Hannah Ehlinger, MaKayla Epple, Madison Hurrle, Maicy Vossen, MaKenzie Leither, Julia Zipoy, Lily Voight, and Zya Lueders.

Kimball Days were held Aug. 7-9. Grand Marshalls were the retired Kimball firefighters; they rode in the parade on a restored 1948 International fire truck (originally purchased new by Kimball and recentaly obtained by the fire dept.).

The 21st annual Forest City Threshers Show and the 26th annual Rendezvous at the Forest City Stockade were held Aug. 15 and 16 (across the road from each other). It's fun to watch the progress made each year, and it's nice to have a truly family-friendly event to attend.

St. John's Lutheran Church in Kimball held an open house in their new building (in the Greely Edition, in the northeast corner of Kimball) Aug. 15-16. A festival of dedication was held there Aug. 23, followed by a reception.

Aug. 17 Kimball's "Old Coots" (KHS graduates from the '50s and '60s) gathered at Triple R. Their group photo was in the Aug. 20 Tri-County News.

St. Anthony's parish in Watkins held their "Picnic in the Park" in McCarthy Park in Watkins. This was a new twist on their annual bazaar.

Daniel Hansen replaced Joe Welter (who retired in July) as the senior accountant in the Kimball office of LeSage, Reynolds & Welter Co., Ltd.

Arrivals: Cadence Marie Novak was born in August to Chadd and Tania (Robinson) Novak of River Falls, Wis.

Departures: Genevieve Rothstein, 87, died Aug. 3.

John "Jack" Cooper Jr., 90, died Aug. 15.

Louise Linn, 93, died Aug. 17.

Robert "Bob" Curtis, 85, died Aug. 17.

Donna Jude, 81, died Aug. 25.

Alma Peglow, 102, died Aug. 26.

Dominic Albers, 15, died Aug. 27.
