Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Dassel-Cokato Chargers traveled to Kimball in non-conference action to try and give the undefeated Cubs their first loss of the season. Kimball played a strong first-half defense, holding the Chargers to 17 first-half points, helping Kimball to a 21-17 lead at the half. In the second half of the game, the hoop would get a lot bigger on both ends, as scoring became easier for each team. Kimball would score 35 second-half points, but D-C answered with 46 second-half points, shooting 17 of 23 from the free-throw line in the second half. With three minutes to play in the game, D-C held a 51-50 lead, and the free-throw advantage down the stretch would be enough to seal the win for D-C and hand the Lady Cubs their first loss of the young season by a final score of 63-56.
Kimball was led in scoring by Sophomore Mandy Wittenberg, with 13 points as she stepped up big for the Cubs, shooting nine for 10 from the free-throw line. Senior Kelsy Vigoren scored nine points, followed by junior Natalie Stein with 8 points, while senior Sarah Messer and sophomore Rachel Arnold each had 7 points. Junior Megan Garding managed to talley 5 points, despite being in foul trouble for most of the game. Sophomore Liz Kastanek finished with 4 points, senior Tesslynn Callander 2 points, and junior Shannon Donnay made one free throw to round out the scoring line. Stein led the team with three steals, followed by Wittenberg and Donnay with two steals each, while Messer battled in the paint, leading the team with six rebounds.
The loss moves Kimball's record to 3-1 on the season, as they look to bounce back at home versus EV-W Tuesday, Dec. 15, then at Holdingford Friday, Dec. 18, followed by a Monday Dec. 21, game at Paynesville before the Holiday break. Go Big Blue!
