Stearns County Sheriff's Office received the report Tuesday, Nov. 24, of an assault that had occurred at a home in Eden Valley. While deputies were on their way, a second 9-1-1 call came in that a person had been stabbed at that residence. The parties involved were Shawn Michael Murphy, 24, and Sara Elizabeth Smith, 21, both of Eden Valley.
When deputies arrived, they found Murphy lying outside the home with a stab wound to the left side of the chest. They were told that Murphy had been physically assaulting Smith. At one point, during the altercation, Smith stabbed Murphy with a knife.
Murphy was taken to the Paynesville Hospital by Paynesville Ambulance. He was treated and released. He was then arrested for domestic assault. He faces charges of misdemeanor domestic assault, DWI, and felony receiving stolen property. He was released from Stearns County Jail Nov. 30 on $2,000 bail.
Smith was arrested at the scene on charges of second-degree and fifth-degree felony assault; she was released later that day.
