A genealogy workshop will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7,at the Stearns History Museum and Research Center located at 235 South 33rd Avenue in St. Cloud.
This is especially for Minnesotans of German or Polish Descent!
Plan to attend two presentations given by Stephen S Barthel, a nationally-known accredited genealogist and former reference consultant of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
Passenger lists, police records and unreadable localities
Observe the process of using multiple sources, including passenger lists, to trace the Maleska family of Stearns County and finding their village in Prussia, despite the illegible locality spellings. Learn what 'police records' are and how they can help you find a place of origin.
Find parish localities in Germany and Poland. Since the Family History Library catalogs record under the name of the locality, and most villages were too small to have a church or vital records office, you will need to use gazetteers to determine where the records were originally kept. Maps, alone, are not enough to locate places of yesteryear. Learn what gazetteers are and how to use them to locate parish registers for any village or farm that has a name.
The cost is $5 for members, and $10 for nonmembers.
