For the third year in a row, the Meeker County 4-H Dairy Project Bowl team won a national contest. This year they defeated Illinois and Florida to capture first place at the World Dairy Expo Invitational contest Oct. 3, which was held in Madison, Wis. The team consisted of Lucas Salfer from Dassel, Alan Barka, Ann Gathje, and Joe Gathje from Watkins and Matt Frenchick from Paynesville. The team earned the trip by placing second in the Minnesota State contest in April.
Dairy Bowl is a "quiz bowl" competition, where all questions deal with dairy topics. Teams of four to six members compete with each other in giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Questions are on topics such as nutrition, reproduction, milk quality, and judging. Teams receive points for correct answers and may lose points for incorrect answers. The team with the highest final score is the winner.
The contest is organized on a double-elimination basis, with winning teams advancing into further rounds until a champion team is selected.
