On a warm sunny afternoon nine bikers from four different churches biked from Forest City to Cold Spring. The bike pilgrimage was sponsored by St. Gertrude's Catholic Church in Forest City. It combined prayer and pedaling as the bikers made their way 20 miles from Forest City through Watkins and St. Nicholas before arriving at the Grasshopper Chapel in Cold Spring.
The bikers benefited from a favorable breeze as they made their way along the rolling country hills. They also had the assistance of Wes Edwards who drove the lead vehicle with water and snacks, Bob Tanner of Bikes by Bob in Litchfield who trailed the group, helping with mechanical issues that arose. For the bikers that needed it, Judy Barka hauled bikes back to Forest City in her horse trailer.
This pilgrimage culminated with the bikers joining more than 100 people that gathered upon Chapel Hill for an outdoor Mass. Aug. 15 is the feast of the Assumption in the Roman Catholic calendar. It is the largest gathering of the year on Chapel Hill.
The next pilgrimage will be Friday, Oct. 16. It will be a 30-mile ride from Forest City to St. John's Abbey in Collegeville. Pilgrims on the ride will have dinner at the university and join the monks of St. John's for evening prayer.
