Brother Dietrich Reinhart of Saint John's Abbey died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at the retirement center of the abbey. He was 59. Mass of Christian Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, in Saint John's Abbey Church with interment in Saint John's Cemetery following the service. Thomas Edward Reinhart was born May 17, 1949, to Donald and Eleanor (Noonan) Reinhart in Minneapolis. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 1967, and he graduated magna cum laude in history from Saint John's University in 1971. He entered the novitiate of Saint John's Abbey in 1971 and requested the name Dietrich in honor of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the great German Lutheran theologian who resisted the Nazi movement and lost his life during World War II. Reinhart received his master's degree in 1976 and doctorate in 1984. In 1991 Reinhart was elected president of Saint John's University and was the first non-ordained monk to be president. In 1997, Brother Dietrich was re-elected for a second term in 1997, and a third term in 2003. In Sept. 2008, he was diagnosed with malignant metastatic melanoma. Brother Dietrich is survived by a brother Stephen and sisters Susan and Mary Blocker.
