Members of the Senate Republican Caucus gathered to discuss the upcoming session, urgent budget issues and direction for the caucus. During the meeting, State Senator Michelle Fischbach (R-Paynesville) was named the Deputy Republican Leader-a position that serves as advisor and second in command to the minority leader. "The job that the Legislature has this year is going to be arduous and monumental as we tackle a formidable budget shortfall," said Senator Fischbach. "I am pleased and proud to serve the Senate Republican Caucus as Deputy Leader during this challenging time because I believe that it is precisely during such demanding times that the Republican Caucus can provide leadership for the Legislature." Senator Fischbach, who is from Paynesville, Minn., was first elected to the Senate in 1996, and is serving her fifth term as senator from the 14th district. She serves as the ranking member on the Health and Human Services Budget Committee, and also serves on the Health, Housing & Family Security; Transportation Budget & Policy Division; Economic Development Budget Division committees of the Senate; and Finance Committee. The Deputy Republican Leader position had been left vacant following the departure of Senator Betsy Wergin (R-Princeton) after her appointment by Governor Pawlenty to the Public Utilities Commission in July. As always, Senator Michelle Fischbach welcomes your comments and concerns. She can be reached at (651) 296-2084. She can also be contacted via e-mail at or by mail at 153 State Office Building, St. Paul MN 55155.
