Lady Cubs fall to 2-2

Kimball hosted Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted to open the conference season Tuesday, Dec. 9. The state-ranked Lakers showed why they are one of the area's dominant teams by jumping out to a commanding lead with a full-court press and fast-break offense pushing their halftime lead to 44-10 and winning the contest 70-23. The Lady Cubs never showed any quit as they fought hard to the very end looking to improve throughout the game. Kimball was led in scoring by senior Emily Straley and junior Kelsey Vigoren with six points each. Junior Tesslynn Callander had five points, while Freshman Brooke Merten, Senior Sarah Powell, and freshman Amanda Wittenberg had two points each. Kimball was led defensively by Straley and Merten with two steals each. Thursday, Dec. 11, Kimball traveled to Dassel Cokato to take on the larger class 3A Chargers in non-conference action. The Lady Cubs struggled to get the offense going on the road even though they were still in the game at halftime trailing 12-22. In the second half, the Chargers extended their lead with a tough man-to-man defense, closing out a 58-32 win. Kimball's Sarah Powell led the team with 10 points and three steals, followed by Emily Straley with eight points, four steals, and five rebounds. Tesslynn Callander had four points and two steals, while sophomore Megan Garding scored three points, Senior Paige Peglow had three points, Brooke Merten had two points along with three steals and four assists, and Kelsey Vigoren and sophomore Kayla Myers each went one for two from the free-throw line to round out the scoring. Kimball's record moves to 2-2 on the season, going next to Maple Lake on Tuesday, Dec 16, and home against Paynesville on Monday Dec. 22.
