St. John's Prep, Aug. 29 The 2008 Kimball Cub football team started the 2008 season at St. John's University to take on a much-improved St. John's Prep team. The Cubs are a very small team, both in size and numbers, but are looking to improve on last year's success. The first quarter was a defensive struggle as both teams were trying to shake off the nerves of first-game jitters. The quarter ended in a scoreless tie, but the Cubs finally got the offense rolling early in the second quarter. Senior quarterback Andy Dingman found sophmore wide receiver, Tyler Loch, for a 12-yard touchdown. Senior running back, Luke Schiefelbein ran the two-point conversion in for an 8-0 lead. The defense held their ground again and forced a punt. The offense moved the ball down the field, this time Dingman found fellow senior, Tommy Linn for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Dingman found senior Stephan Kurkosky in the end zone for the two-point conversion to make the score 16-0 Kimball. In the second half, the Cubs continued to dominate the Johnnies in the trenches as St. John's couldn't move the ball against the young aggressive Cub defense. The offense got the ball back and flexed their muscles and started running the ball to wear the Johnnies' defense down. The drive ended with a three-yard Schiefelbein touchdown run. The extra point was no good to make the score 22-0 Kimball. The Cubs forced another three and out for St. John's, got the ball back and drove the field for a 10-yard run by Tommy Linn to the corner of the end zone. The extra point was missed to make the score 28-0. The Cubs finished the scoring early in the fourth quarter as Schiefelbein broke a 53-yard run for a touchdown; Linn kicked the extra point to make the final 35-0. The freshman finished the game out for the Cubs. They were able to finish the shutout for the Cubs. The leaders for the game were on offense, Dingman was 8-9 for 106 yards and two touchdowns passing. The rushing was lead by Schiefelbein who had 145 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns. Tommy Linn was the leading receiver in receiving and rushing touchdowns along with five catches for 56 yards. The Cubs took on the Pierz Pioneers who are ranked third in the state in class 2A on Sept. 5.
Pierz, Sept. 5 The Kimball Cubs open the home opener against a very good Pierz team. Pierz was ranked third in the state in class 2A, but the young Cubs also received votes for the state ranking in class 2A. The Pioneers quickly showed the young Cubs that they are very worthy of their high ranking. Pierz took the opening kickoff down the field for a touchdown and never looked back. The lack of size and numbers came back to hurt the Cubs as they couldn't get anything going on offense or stop anybody on defense. The Cubs have 14 varsity-age players as Pierz brought more than 60 players for the trip. The Cubs lost a couple of lineman in the second quarter to further hinder the Cubs. The remaining players went into the locker room, down 42-0. The Cubs started the second half with a little more fire and finally solved the Pioneers' defense and scored on a two-yard touchdown run by the senior wide receiver, Tommy Linn, to make the score 49-6. Later in the fourth quarter, senior quarterback found Linn in the end zone for a six-yard touchdown pass to make the final score 55-12 Pierz. The coaching staff is very proud of the effort the young Cubs gave on this night, even though the score doesn't say so. The Cubs had many players out with injury to end the game, so some freshmen received some playing time. This may be the story of the season for the Cubs, as they try to play with limited numbers. The offense was led by senior running back, Luke Schiefelbein with 66 yards rushing, but Luke was not able to complete the game with an injury. The Cubs will now start preparing for the Maple Lake Irish for homecoming on Sept. 12. That is also the night the Kimball 1983 football team is to be celebrated for being the first Kimball football team to go to state. Players on that team are asked to come to the high school about 5:45 p.m. that night. Please come to the west door (door 12). Hope to see you there to cheer on the Cubs.
