The Kimball Cubs Volleyball Team won their season opener against Ogilvie on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 in a 3-2 competitive match. Returning varsity team junior starters include captains Tesslynn Callander and Sarah Messer as well as Molly Hurrle, Maranda Theisen, and Kelsi Woods. Also joining the varsity squad this year are juniors Kelly Mackereth, Chelsey Orth, Nicole Klein, Rachel Lahr and Reana Orbeck. Rounding out the squad are sophomore Shannon Donnay and senior Bridget Gohmann. The Cubs started strong with a 25-18 victory over the Lions in the first game, but fell short in both games two and three with 22-25 and 24-26 close losses. Once the Cubs found their rhythm again, they came back and won games four 25-23 and five 15-8. With Kimball running a 5-1 offensive system, Molly Hurrle led the setting with 106 total attempts and 32 assists. Leading attacking and digging was Tesslynn Callander with nine kills and 27 digs. Overall, the team played hard, was excited about their win, and is looking forward to the next competition at home against Pierz Thursday, Sept. 4, following the junior varsity match that starts at 6 p.m. ********** Despite some early match jitters, the Kimball Cubs junior varsity volleyball team was able to pull out a win against the Ogilvie Lions Tuesday, Aug. 26. The Cubs took the match in three games, losing game one 25-21 after a slow start. The Cubs found their rhythm in games two and three, winning 25-19 and 15-12. This year's junior varsity team includes senior Bridget Gohmann, sophomores Klarissa Eisenbraun, Heidi Lochen, and Chelsey Lamm, and freshmen Rachel Arnold, Maria Donnay, Emily Donnay, and Cora Gohmann. The Cubs will run a 5-1 offense this season, featuring Rachel Arnold as the setter. B. Gohmann and M. Donnay will hit out of the left side, E. Donnay and Eisenbraun work the middle, and C. Gohmann hits of the right. Lochen and Lamm are the team's defensive specialists. The Cubs are coached this year by Tabitha Mortenson and Amy Notch. Their next match is Thursday, Sept. 4, at home against the Pierz Pioneers.
