Helen "Toody" Wakefield of Watkins died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at the Dassel Lakeside Community Home. She was 93. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, at Ostmark Lutheran Church in Watkins with Rev. Melinda Melhus officiating. Interment was in St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Forest City. Helen "Toody" Maxine Wakefield was born June 8, 1915, in Blockton, Taylor County, Iowa, to Milton and Ruth (Ankeny) Risner. She grew up around Clear Lake, Minn., where her parents worked as school teachers. Helen married Bruce Theron Wakefield Oct. 8, 1932, in Litchfield. They farmed near Forest City, raised mink, and worked out to make a living for themselves. In the 1960s, Helen did interior decorating, painting and wallpapering along with family and friends. She and her husband also manufactured spearing decoys for the ice fishing industry for many years. Helen enjoyed having a nice home and spending tme with children and family that surrounded her. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bruce; son Richard; daughter-in-law Alice Wakefield; brothers Leander, Stanley, Harry and Lawrence; and sister Elizabeth. She is survived by her son Max (and Eileen) Wakefield of Cottage Grove; grandchildren Marie (and Daniel) Meierhofer of Golden Valley, Timothy (and Christina) Wakefield of Cottage Grove, Bruce (and Carol) Wakefield of Inver Grove Heights, Ward (and LeAnn) Wakefield of Woodbury, Tracie (and Paul) Killion of Inver Grove Heights, Lorie Wakefield of Watkins, Bret (and Mona) Wakefield of Dassel, Dana (and Troy) Simmons of Watkins; 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; brother Robert Risner of Elbow Lake; sisters-in-law Helen Risner of Nebraska and Donna Wakefield. Pallbearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Music was by Sandy Brown and Sara Dolerschell. Arrangements were by Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins.
