Spanish award Johanna Armstrong, a junior and daughter of Anthony and Ana Maria Studer of Clearwater, has taken 1st place in El Concurso Estatal, a state-wide oral Spanish competition, sponsored by the AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese). Johanna took 1st place in Level V of the competition, with the only perfect score for that level. Participation in Concurso Estatal is by invitation only and it is a great honor for students. Participating students have scored 280 or above on the National Spanish Exam. Commencement Minnesota State University Moorhead expects to award degrees to 850 students during its spring commencement program Friday, May 9, at Nemzek Fieldhouse, beginning at 10 a.m. Area graduates include: Amy Phillips, Cold Spring, Bachelor of Nursing; Tyler Ebnet, Holdingford, Bachelor of Science; Stacy Frie, Holdingford, Bachelor of Science; Becky Middendorf, Melrose, Bachelor of Science; and Leah Spanier, Paynesville, Associate in Arts. St. John's Preparatory School in Collegeville will hold its 151st commencement ceremony May 24 at St. John's Abbey Church, beginning with a 10 a.m. Baccalaureate Mass, followed by the presentation of diplomas to 56 graduates. Among the graduates is Tina Szydlowski, daughter of Thomas and Maura Szydlowski of Cold Spring, who was initiated into the National Honor Society as a sophomore and is a four-year honor student. Tina plans to attend the College of St. Benedict, focusing her studies on biology and Spanish. She plans on entering the medical field.
