Slow start dooms Cubs in loss to Lakers

Cubs v Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted

The Kimball Cubs traveled to Howard Lake to take on the Lakers last Tuesday night, Jan 31. The Cubs struggled out of the gate, committing eight turnovers in the first 6:22 of the game. This led to a 17-3 deficit to start. Kimball turned it around from there, outscoring the Lakers 22-20 and trailed by 12 at the half (37-25).

Both teams played pretty evenly in the second half, until Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted built a 17-point lead (60-43) with 6:19 to play. The Cubs called a timeout to get refocused and then went on a 12-3 run to cut the lead to eight. Kimball had two chances to cut into the eight-point lead, but their shots would not fall. The Lakers went on to win the game by a score of 71-56.

Austin Ruehle poured in a career-high 24 points with 18 of them coming in the second half. Austin had five three pointers in the game. Cameron Hunt had eight rebounds, nine assists and two steals to lead the Cubs in those categories. The loss put Kimball at 4-11 on the season.

Offense struggles as Cubs fall to Irish

The Cubs continued on the road last Friday night, Feb. 3, as they traveled to Maple Lake to take on the Irish. The teams started out in a defensive battle that was very low scoring. Maple Lake jumped out to a 15-6 lead midway through the first half. The Cubs cut into the deficit and trailed 22-15 before the Irish went on a 6-0 run to end the half.

In the first few minutes of the second half the Cubs cut into Maple Lake's lead with the score 35-25. From there it was all Irish as the ball could not find the net for the Cubs. Kimball lost by a 61-36 score.

Jarred Merchant and Cameron Hunt paced the scoring attack with eight points apiece. Austin Ruehle and Preston Peglow each had three assists. Jarred Merchant led the Cubs in rebounding with four boards. Ed Nielsen added two blocked shots. The Cubs fell to 1-7 in CMC play and 4-12 overall.
