March 5, 2011, a building on a corner of Oak Avenue in downtown South Haven burned to the ground; the building next door sustained a good deal of damage. Last week, clean-up of the debris began. Don Rettman Construction LLC of Darwin won the bid at $58,000 to remove asbestos and clean up the two buildings most affected by the fire. The Post Office building (at far left) was cleaned and painted and back in use about a week after the fire. Plans for a new community city hall (across the street from this site) are on hold pending USDA Rural Development funding approval. Staff photo by Jean Doran Matua.
