Kimball Alumni vie for championship

By Jeremy Kuechle

The 11th annual Kimball Alumni Basketball Tournament took place this past saturday, Feb. 4, where nine teams entered the tournament, all with hopes of taking home the championship T-Shirts and trophy. The 2006-2007 team consisting of Jeff Hunt, Devin Rosenow, Kevin Sommers, Dan Stein, Jeff Miller, Adam Magnuson, Mitch Nystrom, and Matt Dingmann finished the tournament undefeated, and claimed the 2012 title. The road wasn't easy, however, as they began the tournament with a little luck by downing last year's champion

1989-1993 team; Mitch Nystrom was the hero, sinking a three-point shot in regulation to push the game into overtime, and turn what looked like a first-round defeat into a two-point overtime victory.

Next, they defeated the crafty 1970-80's team in a hard-fought contest. And after that, took down the talented 2008-2010 team.

In the championship, they would face the explosive

1998-2000 team which would go right down to the wire, but free-throws down the stretch sealed the win and the tournament for team 2006-07. Team 1998-2000 would get second place while team 1994-1997 defeated the 2008-2010 team for third place.

The consolation champion was team 2004-2005, as they defeated the 1970-80's team in the final game of the consolation bracket.

In the three-point shooting contest, the four finalists were Scott Marquardt, Brett Ostby, Tom Knaus, and Jeremy Kuechle, with Scott Marquardt out-shooting the competition to be crowned Kimball's deadliest three-point shooter.

We would like to thank the Kimball Express for coordinating the tournament, also thanking the Kimball Boys High School Basketball players for helping run the scoreboard, clock, and book. Thanks to Bill Liedman and Larry Jensen for some volunteer refereeing, and thanks to our tournament sponsors, Divas: The Hair and Body Care Professionals, Ameriprise Financial, and the S.O.B. Bar and Grill.
