If you are a beginning camper or need to brush up on your camping skills, you will want to attend a backpack camping workshop at Lake Maria State Park from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14.
The workshop will be held at the park's nature center. Registration is not required, and there is no charge. However, there will be a $5 vehicle entry fee for those without an annual park permit. Here's the schedule:
* 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Veteran backpackers Steve Brown and Mike Mack will share their camping experiences and knowledge of backpacking equipment. Presentation includes a short hike to a backpack site.
* 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch on your own.
* 1 to 2 p.m. Angela Effertz from Normandale Community College will explain Leave No Trace camping and outdoor ethics with a Powerpoint presentation at the nature center.
* 2 to 3 p.m. Avid Lake Maria camper Jeff Moravec will share his experiences and knowledge of Lake Maria's campsites, camper cabins and wildlife at the nature center. "There will be ample time during each session for discussion and questions," says Park Manager Mark Crawford.
Lake Maria State Park is located approximately seven miles northwest of Monticello, five miles north of Maple Lake or eight miles northeast of Annandale on Wright County Highway 111.
