April 20, the Stearns County Sheriff's Office participated in a drug take back program organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. The Sheriff's Office hosted three sites where residents could turn in old/unused medication for disposal. During that project, the Sheriff's Office collected
323 pounds of medication that were later incinerated.
The Sheriff's Office has now installed a permanent drop box in the lobby of the Stearns County Law Enforcement Center,
807 Courthouse Square, St. Cloud. The box will be available during normal business hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents may drop off any unused medications which will then be sorted and incinerated. This project is made possible through the assistance of
Stearns County Environmental Services and the pharmacy department of Coborn's Inc.
It is important to dispose of unused medications to keep them out of the hands of those that may abuse these substances. Other methods of disposal (flushing or garbage) have been proven to contaminate the ground water. Sewer treatment plants are not able to remove the chemicals while treating waste water and cannot prevent the chemicals from entering other water sources.
