The Cubs played a doubleheader Thursday, April 28, against B-B-E after a rainout on Tuesday. Each team opened with a run in the first inning with Tiffany Berscheid leading off with a triple for Kimball. The Cubs were poised to score more but left the bases loaded. A disastrous second inning put the Cubs in a 5-1 hole. Natalie Stein doubled and scored in the third, but BBE added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Cubs got three runs back in the fifth with Shannon Donnay, Brooke Merten, and Melody Rose scoring. Natalie Stein scored in the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-6 entering the seventh. With two outs in the seventh Megan Garding singled, then Steph Konz singled, and Natalie Stein got her third hit of the game to drive in both runners for an 8-7 victory. Stein and Berscheid had three hits each with Megan Libbesmeier, Megan Garding, Shannon Donnay, Steph Konz, and Brooke Merten each contributing two hits each. The Cubs had a season high 17 hits, but left 12 runners on base during the game. Megan Libbesmeier pitched the win with 10 strikeouts and five earned runs.
Game two began with Lexi Rose making her varsity debut on the mound. Nerves led to a rough first inning and an unearned run. The Cubs grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, with Berscheid and Garding scoring on Donnay's RBI hit. Megan Garding then hit a three-run home run in the third to give the Cubs a 5-1 lead. B-B-E scored twice in the fifth using two errors. The Cubs responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning as Berscheid, Stein, Melody Rose, and Lexi Rose scored. Adding single runs in the fourth and sixth innings gave the Cubs an 11-4 win. Berscheid led with three hits and Garding and Donnay had two hits apiece. Lexi Rose went the distance with seven strikeouts and two earned runs.
This week the CMC season continues with Rockford on Monday, Maple Lake on Tuesday, a doubleheader with Pierz on Thursday, and a non-conference game with Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity on Friday. The Cubs are now 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in CMC play.
