Charges added to list against Timothy Gilles

The Stearns County Attorney's Office Monday, May 2, filed additional charges against Timothy Richard Gilles aka Ricky Gilles, DOB 3/24/89. Gilles continues to be held in the Stearns County Jail on $1.5 Million bail without conditions and $750,000 with conditions.

The additional charges stem from an April 15, 2011, incident where Gilles fled from police in a motor vehicle and struck another vehicle driven by Timothy Martin Casanova at the intersection of 2nd Street South and Waite Avenue, in St. Cloud. Casanova died at the scene. Megan Irene Thomsen, a passenger in Casanova's vehicle and pregnant at the time of the collision, was injured and transported to the St. Cloud Hospital. She later delivered her child by emergency c-section. The child, Timothy James Thomsen, died of injuries suffered in the collision.

Charges against Gilles now include two counts of Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle Resulting in Death, two counts of Murder in the Third Degree, and one count of Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle Resulting in Substantial Bodily Harm. Gilles' next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19.

Kimball man killed in ATV accident

The body of Stephen Berscheid was found early Wednesday morning, April 27, next to an ATV on 677th Avenue in Watkins. Someone driving along 677th Avenue spotted the crashed ATV at 3:47 a.m. Meeker County deputies and the Watkins Ambulance responded to the scene but Berscheid was already deceased and the county coroner was called.

Investigation determined that Berscheid was traveling eastbound on 395th Street. Tracks indicate that he attempted to turn northbound onto 677th Avenue but the ATV lost control, rolled over, and came to a stop on the roadway with Berscheid lying on the ground nearby. The investigation is continuing.

Narcotics arrest April 27

Wednesday, April 27, Central MN Drug and Gang Task Force arrested Jeremy Hover, age 35 of Champlin. Hover had completed a drug transaction at a location near Highway 15 and 2nd Street S. in

St. Cloud. Investigators bought 40 Oxycodone pills and 60 Dilaudid pills from Hover and then they arrested him at about 3 p.m. Both drugs are DEA Schedule II, having approved medical uses, but also have the highest potential for abuse. Jeremy was taken to the Stearns County Jail where he will be charged with 2nd and 4th degree sales of controlled substances. The St. Cloud Police Department Patrol Division assisted with the arrest.

Search warrant executed in Melrose

The Central MN Drug and Gang Task Force, with assistance of the Stearns/Benton SERT Team executed a search warrant Wednesday, April 13 at the address of 4 Third Street SE in the city of Melrose. Officers found Janell Rittgers and Leslie Umpleby in the residence. Ross Rittgers arrived back at the residence a short time later. Investigators seized 54 grams of methamphetamine, a.22 handgun, a disassembled machine gun kit, and more than $8,000 in U.S. currency.

A glass container believed to contain carbon tetrachloride was also removed from the residence and turned over to the Stearns County Environmental Services. Carbon tetrachloride was historically used in old fire extinguishers, but was banned in 1980 because of environmental and safety hazards. The substance damages the central nervous system, liver and kidneys and being exposed to this liquid can also lead to death. Blasting caps were also located in the residence and removed by the Bloomington Bomb Squad.

All three persons were taken to the Stearns County Jail for various charges. Ross Rittgers, age 45, will be charged with first-degree controlled substance violations, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Janell Rittgers, age 45, will be charged with first-degree controlled substance violations, and Leslie Umpleby, age 31, will be charged with possession of legend drugs (prescription drugs not prescribed to them).

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division, Melrose Police Department, Melrose Ambulance, MN State Patrol, Bloomington Bomb Squad, and the Stearns County Environmental Services all assisted in the investigation.

Wright County Sheriff's Office

On April 25, Carla Rae Ecklund, 43, of Annandale was arrested in Annandale on a Wright County warrant for 5th degree controlled substance violation.

On April 25, Tanner John Tschumperlin, 18, of Cokato was arrested in Stockholm Township on an apprehension and detention order from Stearns County.

On April 25, Trent Daniel Olson, 28, of South Haven was charged with felony theft.

On April 26, James Patrick Blaisdell, 42, of Clearwater was arrested in Clearwater on an apprehension and detention order from the MN Department of Corrections.

5:40 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a theft report from a residence on County State Aid Highway 2, Watkins.

Sunday, May 1

4:36 a.m. the Sheriff's Office assisted the Coon Rapids Police Department in checking for an individual at a residence on County State Aid Highway 27, South Haven.

9:59 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to an animal complaint on 745th Avenue, Dassel. A deputy located the two cows at the address and later found that the calves were secured in a fence.

1:42 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a gas drive off that occurred on Service Road North, Watkins.

2:23 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an order for protection violation at a residence on 340th Street, Grove City. The deputies located the suspect and after investigation, arrested Janet Kay Cunningham, age 64, of Grove City, on charges of Order for Protection Violation and 5th Degree Assault.

Sunday, May 1 (continued)

5:20 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to an animal complaint on MN Highway 24, Litchfield. A deputy located the owner and the cows were corralled.

10:09 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a driving complaint on MN Highway 15, Kingston. The deputy located the vehicle and driver who was advised of the complaint and given a warning.

10:40 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of 2 gunshots at a residence on South Comet Street, Cosmos. The deputies made contact with the resident by phone. The deputies continued negotiations and the resident surrendered without incident. The resident, Jerry Vaughn Plieseis, age 46, of Cosmos, was arrested for Reckless Discharge of a Firearm with Disregard to Safety, Reckless Discharge of a Firearm within a Municipality and Disorderly Conduct. A 9mm handgun was located in the residence and two rounds of spent ammo were located in a nearby tree. The Meeker County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Litchfield Police K-9 unit.

Saturday, April 30

1:14 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a found canoe on Maple Lake off of 200th Street, Dassel.

3:37 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to and dispatched Watkins Rescue and Ambulance for a medical on Church Street, Watkins. One individual was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital.

7:23 p.m. a Sheriff's Deputy observed unsafe conditions in the area of Central Avenue North, Watkins. The deputy and a Watkins Public Works employee secured the area until the situation can be repaired.

9:06 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to an animal complaint in the area of US Highway 12, Dassel. The deputy removed the dead deer from the roadway.

11:47 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of suspicious activity near a residence on 737th Avenue, South Haven. The deputy checked the area and several residences and found that the vehicle had left prior to arrival.

Friday, April 29

9:01 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of illegal dumping at a residence on 375th Street, Eden Valley.

11:49 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance to a medical at a residence on Luella Street, Watkins. One individual was transported to Paynesville Hospital.

12:55 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to and dispatched Watkins Ambulance to a medical at a residence in the Watkins Trailer Park, Watkins. One individual was transported to St. Cloud Hospital.

1:35 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of a driving complaint on County State Aid Highway 19, South Haven. The deputy contacted the vehicle owner and warned them of the complaint.

5:30 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a request to assist the public at a residence in the Watkins Trailer Park, Watkins. The deputy made contact and advised the individual of their options.

8:56 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to an alarm at a business on 3rd Street North, Watkins. The deputy checked the property and found all to be okay.

10:17 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of suspicious activity in the area of County State Aid Highway 15 and County State Aid Highway 29, Dassel. The deputies checked the area and found all to be okay.

Thursday, April 28

7:05 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance for a medical at a residence on Glenshire Boulevard, Watkins. The party was treated on scene and no transport was needed.

8:20 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of theft by check at a business on West MN Highway 55, Watkins.

8:24 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took reports on three separate incidents of vulnerable adults at a residence on Luella Street, Watkins.

9:30 a.m. the Sheriff's Office, the MCIU Drug and Gang Task Force and the CVI Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at a residence on 1st Street North, Darwin. Jeffrey Alan Truelson, age 44, Darwin, was arrested for 5th degree controlled substance violation.

2:35 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an unwanted individual at a residence on Meeker Avenue South, Watkins. Upon arrival of the deputies the individual left without incident.

6:08 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Gold Cross Ambulance to a medical at a residence on Stearns Avenue West, Eden Valley. One individual transported to Meeker Memorial Hospital.

9:34 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of a car/deer accident on MN Highway 15, Kimball. There were no injuries and the call was transferred to MN State Patrol.

Wednesday, April 27

12:29 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Watkins Ambulance to a medical at a residence on State Street North, Eden Valley. One individual was transported to Paynesville Hospital.

2:30 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a request to assist the public at an address on 677th Avenue, Watkins. The deputy removed the debris from the roadway.

3:30 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a theft from a business on County State Aid Highway 17, Watkins.

Monday, April 25

8:53 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of theft by check at a business on Central Avenue North, Watkins.

12:44 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance, per the request of the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, to a medical at a residence on Magnus Johnson Street North, Kimball. One individual was transported to the Buffalo Hospital.

8:00 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a civil issue at a residence in the Watkins Trailer Park, Watkins.

10:02 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of theft from a business on MN Highway 55, Watkins.

Fatal accident on Hwy. 15

At 2:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, the driver of a Mazda Protege drove onto the shoulder of Highway 15 heading south, then overcorrected causing the car to swing into an oncoming semi truck hauling grain. The truck driver tried to avoid a collision, leaving skid marks for more than 600 feet along the highway, but struck the car broadside, on the driver's door. The Mazda driver was dead on the scene; his name had not been released as of press time. He was only described as a 28-year-old man from Watkins. The truck driver, Darrell Albertson of Fergus Falls, was shaken but not physically injured. According to the State Patrol, both the car and truck sustained serious damage.
