Kimball Lady basketball team has tough week

It was a rocky week at home for the Kimball Area girls’ basketball team. Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Cubs suffered a 55-36 defeat at the hands of the Rockford W-Cubs-GBB-vs-Rockford-48Rockets. Kimball played hosts again Friday, Jan. 24, welcoming Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and fell, 65-54. The Rockets went on a 17-4 run to start the second half to help them to the Central Minnesota Conference victory. Junior center Madelyn O’Brien led Kimball (0-5, 3-9) with 17 points. “We jumped out in front early and led most of the first half. Rockford took the lead for the first time, 18-15, with four minutes left in the first half and never trailed again. They came out strong in the second half, with a 17-4 scoring run, to build on their half-time lead of 25-22. We struggled in the second half, shooting 6 of 24 from the field and 1 for 4 from the free throw line,” said coach Jeremy Kuechle.


Kimball wrestlers look good at Staples Invite

The Kimball Area wrestling squad battled at the Staples Invitational Saturday, Jan. 18. Kimball 6th-grade girls take 3rd

Kimball girls’ basketball team falls just short at Holdingford

The Lady Cubs’ basketball team played at Holdingford Tuesday, Jan. 14, in a makeup game previously postponed from Jan. 7. It was a good battle, but the Huskers held on for a 44-41 victory. Kimball jumped out to an 18-8 lead thanks to sophomore W-08-CubsGBB-at-HoldingfordBecky Holtz’s 9 first-half points. Senior guard Joelle Ertl provided all the offense for Holdingford, scoring 19 of her 34 total points in the first-half; single-handedly bringing the Huskers back to gain a 23-21 halftime lead. Holdingford built their lead to 33-24 with just over 10 minutes left in the second half.


Kimball basketball boys outlast Johnnies

The Cubs invited St. John’s Prep to town Monday, Jan. 13, and handed them a 76-69 loss. W-Cameron-Hunt-1000-points-140113-cubs-bbb-vs-stjohns-041

Cameron Hunt hit a free throw late in the game to achieve the 1,000-point milestone and finished with nine assists and five rebounds. 

Both teams struggled early from the field; Kimball 1/6 and St. John’s Prep 0/4. With 11:30 left in the half Kimball led 14-5. The lead grew to 10 at one point (25-15). St. John’s Prep made a run late in the half and went to the locker room tied at 33. Early in the second half, the lead changed hands a few times. Kimball stretched the lead to 12, 58-46, but SJP made a run and cut the lead to five (66-61) with 1:29 left. The Cubs made their FTs down the stretch to seal the win 76-69. The Cubs out-rebounded the Johnnies 30-24, and had fewer turnovers 11-15. In the second half, the Cubs were 13/14 from 2-point range. Overall Kimball was 25/32 from 2-point range, 4/21 from 3-point range, and 14/18 from the free-throw line. SJP was 18/32, 8/20 and 9/13.
