Temps in 80s for weekend

Weather: I hope everyone had a fun 4th of July Weekend. The weather cooperated for the most part over the weekend with temperatures in the 80s and even lower 90s on both Saturday and Sunday.

Some scattered showers and thunderstorms moved across parts of Minnesota Saturday night bringing with it quite a lightning show at times.

The winds were a problem at times over the weekend, however, with gusts to around 35 mph
Sunday. This didn’t make for as pleasant conditions as many of you would have liked during the big weekend.

The good news was that the weather was pretty decent for most of the area for fireworks on both the 4th of July and over the weekend as thunderstorms held off when needed. Although “Mother Nature” had her own fireworks Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

What’s up for 4th of July?

: I had the pleasure of working the Vikingland Band Festival Parade Sunday, June 29, directing traffic with the Alexandria Police Department as a member of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Posse.

Bands from all over the state of Minnesota were on hand dealing with very strong winds at times.

It would have been a picture perfect day for the festival if the winds hadn’t been clocked at 39.1 mph during the event. Dew points and humidity levels were quite low with the temperature reaching the lower 80s Sunday.

Warmer temps later in week

Weather: An upper level low slowly moved southeast across the Upper Midwest on Tuesday and brought scattered showers and thunderstorms to Minnesota.

High temperatures on Monday and Tuesday were generally in the low- to mid-70s across the area. This was a few degrees cooler than average for this time of the year.

Some showers and thunderstorms could last into Wednesday and the midweek. However, the bulk of the moisture is expected to pass through the area by Wednesday morning.

Another system is expected to set up and arrive by Wednesday night into Thursday. At this stage, none of these disturbances are expected to have a great deal of moisture associated with them.

Temperatures will start to warm up later in the week as we head towards the weekend. With the warm temperatures, rain chances will also return with the best chance of showers and thunderstorms this week coming late Friday into Saturday. Temperatures will return to the low- to mid-80s over the weekend.

Summer solstice Saturday

Weather: Heavy rainfall is causing flooding concerns across Minnesota. Last weekend three to six inches of rainfall fell across a good share of Central, West Central, and Northern Minnesota.

In addition, Saturday, winds of 50 to 70 mph were reported across parts of Minnesota causing some trees to be toppled.

More rain arrived Monday causing additional flood concerning. Parts of Northern Minnesota have had to do some sandbagging to keep rivers and lakes from impacting homes and cottages near International Falls.

A warm front followed by a cold front will arrive first of all on Wednesday. Rain chances will increase Wednesday night into Thursday as that cold front will slide through that warm and moist air. This will be the focus of some additional thunderstorms across the Upper Midwest.

There may be rain for Father’s Day

: An upper level low brought some showers across parts of Southern Minnesota Monday to start off this week. Most of Central and Northern Minnesota, however, enjoyed some sunshine.

This system moved out of Minnesota by Monday evening allowing for pleasant weather state-wide for Monday night into Tuesday as high pressure returned to the region.

For Wednesday, our next storm system will arrive bringing a good chance of showers and thunderstorms to the Upper Midwest. A few of these cells could be on the strong side and produce heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hail.

Lingering showers and thunderstorms will be with us for Thursday mainly early in the day. Temperatures will be on the cool-side for Thursday as a northerly flow will drive in some chillier air.

Another system sets up as we head into the Father’s Day Weekend. Rain chances will return late Friday. However, the best chance of showers and thunderstorms will be with us Saturday at this stage.
