EV-W shows well
The 2012-2013 Central Minnesota Conference recently released the high school All-Conference wrestlers, and the EV-W Eagles landed two in the all-conference status, while four earned honorable mention. The Eagles’ all-conference wrestlers are seniors Zach Blonigen and Austin Peterson. Zach’s conference record is 5-1 and Austin posted a perfect 4-0 mark. Honorable mention recipients, each with 4-2 final conference records, include juniors Luke Kuechle, Hunter Mathies, Cain Renner, and seventh-grader Matt Schindler. Eagles Coach Dan Berg was pleased with the successful season. “Well, it was a year with a lot of ‘shoulda,’ ‘woulda,’ ‘couldas,’ but when you can’t get a full line-up in there every meet, it’s going to be tough. It was a good season overall, with 2 all-conference and 4 honorable mention wrestlers making the cut. We had two last year, so getting 6 in there this year was good. Three of those kids, Luke Kuechle, Hunter Mathies, and Matt Schindler, got their honorable mentions the last dual of the year, coming up with big wins over good opponents.”
After a decisive win over Minnewaska in the Class AA Section 6 Boys’ basketball Tournament, the Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles were eliminated in round two Saturday at St. John’s University. The number-one seeded Litchfield Dragons put an end to the Eagles’ season, with a smothering 52-21 victory. The Dragons came out on fire, and built a 14-point advantage at the half. The Eagles never really got started and were colder than a Minnesota winter night. The 21 total points scored by EV-W would have been big in Vegas, but it was nothing less than dismal Saturday night. Box score: senior guard Brent Stenger, 4; sophomore forward Jared Streit, 5; senior guard Alex Geislinger, 5; senior forward Kirby Knutson, 4; senior forward Mitchell Lease, 3.
Entering the Minnesota Class AA Section 6 Boys basketball tournament as the #4 seed, the host Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles ousted the fifth-seeded rival Minnewaska Area
Lakers Thursday night, 74-59. The game was a highly competitive battle for the first half, as the Eagles took a slim one-point lead into the break. Coach Adam Langer was pleased with the second-half effort.
“We were up one at halftime. We came out in the second half knowing we had to do a better job rebounding on the defensive end, and limiting our turnovers. We did a much better job with those two aspects of the game in the 2nd half.”
The Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles lost at Minnewaska Area Friday night, March 1, 72-65, to close out the regular season. Taking a 5-point halftime advantage into the locker room, the Lakers never really lost control. They cruised to the victory, thanks to double-figures scoring by five players. The Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles’ scoring attack included senior guard Brent Stenger, 25; senior guard Alex Geislinger, 6; senior forward Kirby Knutson, 2; sophomore guard Bret Mattice, 15; sophomore forward Jared Streit, 15; senior forward Mitchell Lease, 2. Eden Valley-Watkins finishes the season at 4-10 in the Central Minnesota Conference, and 11-13 overall.
