EV-W football team licking their wounds following opener

The Mayer Lutheran Crusaders football team was on a mission Thursday, August 29, and the Eden Valley-Watkins squad was first on their list.  Mayer Lutheran, from the Minnesota River Conference, actually saw Eden Valley-Watkins hit the scoreboard first, taking an early first quarter touchdown lead.  However, the Crusaders awakened in quarter two and exploded for 27 points, holding the Eagles to just six.  EV-W coach Jon Thielen sums it up.  “We made way too many mistakes against a very solid team.  Mayer was very solid up front and their size gave us a lot of problems.  We had some bright spots with big runs by Deshaun James, but other than that we were way too inconsistent.”  The Crusaders came out of the halftime break and put up another 21, sealing the never-in-doubt victory, 48-19.

Hoping to get on the right track, the Eagles hit the road to play the Rockford Rockets in a Central Minnesota Conference battle, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.

EV-W 2013 softball team achievements

Following a most successful and rewarding season, the 2013 Eden Valley-Watkins softball team, fresh off their impressive Third-Place state tournament finish, can lay claim to owning the best record in the history of the program, at 16-5. Though there were many valuable contributions by numerous talented players, coach Dave Dziengel remains a substantial part of the team’s accomplishments. His “just do it” attitude and “stay with it” practice methods are the perfect ingredients for a top-W-EVW Girls Softball IMG 0746notch recipe. Dziengel said that the key to their team’s success is team work. Further, he noted that the overwhelming support the girls have received this year has not only been most appreciated, but it has been an integral part of the team’s fulfillments.

The 2013 Eagles saw the best year in the history of the program, posting an overall record of 16-5 and placing third in the state tournament. EV-W coach Dave Dziengel is proud of his team and very appreciative of the overwhelming support. “On behalf of me and my coaching staff, we would like to thank all of the parents, fans, EV-W Lions, the booster club, the administration, media, and everyone that took time out of their schedules to come and watch us play for two days in Mankato. We really appreciate it and we feel fortunate to have such loyal fans.”
