Wednesday, March 25, 1863
More fighting occurred on Black Bayou as the Federal expedition on Steele’s Bayou continued to bog down. Two Federal rams attempted to run the Vicksburg, Miss., batteries from north to south. The U.S.S. Lancaster was struck about 30 times with most of the crew escaping. The U.S.S. Switzerland, badly disabled, floated out of the firing range.
Major General Ambrose Burnside, former commander of the Army of the Potomac, superseded Major General Horatio G. Wright in command of the Department of the Ohio.

Major Highlights for the Week Wednesday, March 18, 1863
In Paris, the house of Erlanger opened a loan of three million pounds to the Confederacy based upon 7-percent bonds for 20 years.
Confederate Lieutenant General Theophilus H. Holmes assumed command of the District of Arkansas.
Thursday, March 19, 1863
Admiral David Farragut’s U.S.S. Hartford and U.S.S. Albatross ran past the Grand Gulf, Miss., batteries just below Vicksburg.
Two divisions of the Federal Ninth Corps embarked at Newport News, Va., headed for the Department of the Ohio.
Kimball Library history

The Kimball Library will officially open Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. Hours will be from 3-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Friday’s hours will be from 7:30-9 p.m. Mrs. Evelyn Ellis has been hired by the village council to serve as the librarian. She will be trained by the St. Cloud library staff. The library, which will be located in the council room at the village hall, will replace the visits of the Stearns County Bookmobile.

The Stearns County Branch Library opened Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. Eighty-five registered the first two days and 190 books have been checked out.
The public is urged to take advantage of the 1,073 books on the shelves. There is reading material for all ages. Everyone is invited to visit the library and enjoy with others the Golden Picture Atlas, 1961 World Almanac and Book of Facts, Minnesota Legislative Manual, the Picture History of America, Facts on Sports, Webster’s Dictionary, and Compton’s Pictured Encyclopedia.
